Chefchaouen the blue pearl of Morocco

Chefchaouen, or Chaouen, is a city in the Rif Mountains of northwest Morocco. It’s known for the striking, blue-washed buildings of its old town.

Chefchaouen is somewhere where you can enjoy a real, authentic experience of Morocco, with traditional markets, hammams and restaurants to enjoy. It’s ideally placed for venturing out into the countryside too; as well as the beautiful Rif mountain range you have the Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve on your doorstep, and the Talassemtane National Park on the other side of the town. Whether it’s the influence of being surrounded by nature, the cool blue walls or the natural hospitableness of the Moroccan character,  is famous for being a friendly, relaxed place to visit. It’s certainly somewhere you don’t want to miss on your next visit to Morocco.

The blue pearl city has a very rich history and preserve many secrets with different cultural influences (Muslim, Arabic, Spanish and Jewish). You can discover its treasures in the old median where many workshops expose carpets, leatherwares, spices, metal wares. Chaouen is particularly renowned for Carpets artisans, and there are many traditional ateliers through the town, whose goods you can find at many of the local stores and in the larger northern cities. Many of the craftsmen served their apprenticeships here.

Recently many cooperatives were initiated to preserve the Moroccan traditional art and help craftsman to continue building handmade treasures. Those initiatives had positive social impact and many young talented craftsmen joined the experience. Hopefully, the Moroccan centuries old technique will be preserved, and the Moroccan lifestyle will continue impressing the world.
